While developing chemical formulas
are a critical first step in projects, engineering the application processes are essential for overall success. Our
chemists are heavily involved in the engineering of the processes—developing new formulations,
troubleshooting production and process issues, and implementing changes in real time on the floor. Frequently,
compressed customer timelines require the individual to theorize and prototype rapidly without the luxury of in-
depth analytical tools.
For chemists who prefer running in-depth lab experiments and comprehensive reports, this would not be the
right fit. For those who enjoy rapid prototyping of formulations and processes, transferring the processes to the
production line, and trouble-shooting the issues, you’ll do well here. Other 20% will be analysis and work to document processes.

We are open to providing some relocation support (usually a lump sum to offset expenses) for the right candidate.

  • Engineering degree- textile degree, textile chemistry degree, all good
  • Could be the person's first job out of school
  • internship or lab project exp in school would be great
  •

Hollering across the room to each other- really work closely together

Team player

Growth: goals are put into place at beginning of the year, after you have proven yourself can handle projects of your own, grow to PD Engineer. Engineer 1, 2, 3. Within dept- there are also other roles- ex: Rick is leading their analytical group, manages the lab, he is Product Innovation Manager- he gets oddball projects tht take more digging and research, he also does analytical work. Director of Prod. Inn– Ashley’s old role- strategic role focused on products that can be pushed into the market- looking for holes in the market- surveying customers, developing materials, presenting to customers. Push projects- pushing to market, vs pulling customer in. Her old role is open, but if she sees a lot of potential in R&D Engin- that person would grow into that role.

Need this person to work on other projects besides airbags

Would also consider:

  • Lamination

  • Rubber

Products they would work on:

  • Shifted angle fabrics- rubber industry- being made in Cheraw, moving to NC, involve a big collab with production, got some new engineering that will take place in a line to make it successful- rubber coated- going into belting type application- industrial fabric- patent on the fabric- unique to TTI, need to get it running in Kville plant.

  • This fab is unique- customers get old style fabric in- way they have to cut and turn it a lot to make belts- this fabric, shifted angle- belt ready product- cuts down on the cutting and turning, already ready to go on the belt.

  • Geting the product in front of customers- some customers have older fabrics- intro this to them and getting them on board

  • 3 main parts: airbag, rubber -shifted angle fabcs, thermal protective systems- space industry, a lot of customers they have saturated the NA market- looking to expand to european markets, customer now in new zealand, have 2 export licenses, taking someone who could take materials and develop them for other aerospace customers for the EU market- export controlled

  • Finding other uses of the materials- gret insulators- good for outerskins of vehicles- where else can they be used. Supplying to rocket companies- buy it and yse it for other applications, finding out what the other applications are.

  • Anyone interested in rubber, space, airbag.

  • Ashley envisions wanting the team to be able to work on anything- used to be silod, but she wants the team to be agile, she doesnt want someone to be overloaded just working on one area- all the groups now are focused more on the customer rather than the type of product- when a new project comes in she wants them to be eager to work on whatever type of product/project.

  • Customer interaction: they would work directly with the customer- needs to be customer facing, good comm skills.

  • Ashley wants someone who can comm with all types of ppl- floor, management, customers, internal and external ppl

  • Be a good team player, friendly, good listener- someone who is going to be open to learning from anyone and easy to talk to and communicate

  • This role is semi-sales- will travel with sales ppl, listen to their issues and suggest products based on issues- not always paired with the same sales person- depending on what the project is. Work with all sales ppl too.

  • R&D is very interesting- fun- see all aspects of biz from accounting to full production- not coming in and sitting in a lab sending out samples, expected to help with costing aspect, take it to completion- might work some in lab, but also file it in production- full spectrum.

  • Cradle to grave- whole process- you are expected to be there for trial runs- getting feedback from customers- what can they do to improve it.

  • Matt Avery- good example- came in to R&D and found other loves- he got to explore what he loved and grown into GM.

  • Travel: usually 4x a year total to go with sales to visit customers, a total of 4 weeks out of the year- one of those weeks will be a conference and see all customers at once, big rubber show that they go to and see their customers at one time. Mostly domestic- depends on the conference, space show in Germany they went to last year- intl travel not required, but there are opps to intl travel, they would want them to go to those locations.

Tangible:

  • Engineering degree

  • Chemistry- textile degree

  • Proj mgmt

  • Customer exp

Intangibles:

  • Comm w/all parties

  • Go-getter- driven

  • Get out on the floor- not be shy on the floor- work with the ppl running machines- good relships with the prod associates- need to get along w/everyone- roll the sleeves up. Not someone who wants to sit at a desk in their khaki pants. Someone who will get out there.

More notes on skillset:
  • Is the focus more on new pattern creation, updating existing collections, or a mix of both?  Mostly New but definitely a mix , they will need to be flexible and able to adapt to whatever the business needs.
  • Will this person be responsible for trend research? Or is that handled by someone else?  Overarching Trend Direction is handled by someone else but they will be expected to have an informed POV to help contribute to individual collections. Designers are expected to support with research, reference gathering, and translating trend direction into applicable textile concepts. Ability to understand trends and be abreast of trends from a designer perspective is crucial.
  • Are there any specific design aesthetics/patterns you want this designer to specialize in? (i.e Persian Rugs, Modern, etc)  As professional designers  they need to be versatile, able and skilled to design into different styles. Each project will be working on a different style whether Heritage Persians, Modern Geometrics etc etc
  • Are there any other required tools or platforms beyond Photoshop? I would say Adobe suite  ( photoshop, illustrator , google sheets etc ) we use Asana  ( but I don't think it's crucial to know when joining )
  • Illustrator proficiency – must have or nice to have? Does this person need experience with textile-specific tools like Fresco, Procreate, or Others? Adobe Photoshop is the core tool used daily. Illustrator is nice to have (not a must) but helpful for certain design types. Familiarity with textile-specific digital drawing tools (e.g., Procreate, Fresco) is beneficial for speed to market but not required. We’re open to designers bringing in those skills as an enhancement.
  • How many new designs or iterations are typically expected per week/per month?  Designers are generally expected to contribute at least 4-6 new designs per collection (depending on complexity), alongside recolors and refinements (It can average higher than that based on experience-level and design efficiency). On average, this looks like 2–4 finalized designs per month, with workload flexing up or down depending on the collection and deadlines.
